Global warming is one of the most severe environmental issues the world is facing today. Due to excessive burning of the fossil fuels, more and more carbon dioxide is being emitted into the atmosphere. These carbon based gases also known as the green house gas, trap heat, and are the most important causes of global warming.

The smoke belching out of the factories, manufacturing units and vehicles, is choking our planet. The chemicals used for enhancing agricultural produce are inflicting heavy and permanent damage to the top soil and the water table. The carbon emissions act as heat traps and are responsible for the steady rise in the average global temperature. Due to this global warming, the polar ice caps are melting at an alarming rate. Slowly but surely all of the low lying areas and the costal landscapes of the world are going to change permanently. Even the weather pattern has changed due to this global warming, frequent tropical storms are hitting the United States, the monsoon has become irregular in the Indian Subcontinent, the affects of the El Nino on Central America was devastating which disrupted normal life in the entire region.

The time has come for us to do something in order to solve this perilous danger of global warming. As per the records from the ancient times, long before the first human walked the planet, it is observed, that whenever Earth faced a catastrophe, the living organisms at the top of the food chain were the worst hit. This time it’s us, so if we don’t take measures today then our future is not so certain.

Researchers all over the world are searching for ways to counter global warming. One of the major questions regarding global warming is how human beings should prepare themselves to face the problem head on. The best method as per many experts is not to counter global warming but to adapt accordingly. The adaptation would not include sudden extravagant steps but a more practical approach towards tackling the problem. A simple example would help in the understanding, as the process of global warming and rise in sea levels have already began, it will be difficult for the mankind to stop it immediately. Therefore what we can do is build extensive sea water defenses, in order to keep out the water from entering land. This is what scientists mean by saying adapting to global warming.

• One of the primary methods of adapting to global warming is the Agricultural production. The changing weather pattern, such as excessive rainfall and droughts, causes crop failures. Such events usually lead to disturbances in the political, economic and social spheres of human life. Though the effects would not be that severe as in this era of global trade, the impact can be lowered with the supply of surplus food to the affected areas. Drought resistant crops can really help in adapting to such a situation caused by global warming.

Places with heavy rainfall round the year or even for few months can store the rainwater in large man made lakes and reservoirs for future uses. The stored water can also be distributed via inundation channels to parts hit by drought.
   
• Controlling weather by the use of technology is another method of adapting to global warming includes the use of techniques like cloud seeding and artificial rainfall. These techniques help in increasing the amount of precipitation.
